Subject: Lawrence's Website Tutorial - Pt. 3
Hi Lawrence,
It's our 3rd day together and so far you've learned the basics of
what's involved with creating a website. If you haven't registered
your domain name yet then don't worry because you can still
register it after you read this issue or whenever you're ready.
Today I'm going to talk about web hosting. As I mentioned
yesterday, it's the backbone of your website and no site can exist
without a host.
This is the most important section of the tutorial thus far. I
would even recommend printing it out and reading it a couple of
times just so you get a feel for what you need to do next.
After today I'm going to leave you alone for a while and let all
this soak in. I know you've abosrbed a lot of information over the
past few days so you probably need a little break. ;)
-------------------------------------------
What Is a Web Host?
-------------------------------------------
A web host provides the space to build your pages. They setup your
email accounts and ensure your site is up and running 24 hours/day,
7 days/week.
Also, if you want to build chat rooms, databases, add music, games,
take online orders and add more advanced functionality, your web
host is what supports these additions.
Some hosts provide software or web page building tools. Others may
provide the capability so you can use your own software to create
and manage your web pages. There's more info on this below.
All of the recommended hosting options provide the following:
- Allow you to update your site 24/7
- Cancellations at anytime
- Excellent customer support
- Free email accounts (you@yourdomain.com)
--------------------------------------------------------
There are 3 different hosting options I'm going to explain and
recommend to you. You'll pick the host that closely matches
yourbudget and fits with the needs for your site.
To actually create and save your pages to the Internet you can
either use tools provided by your web host or you can use existing
web software that you may already own (more on that later).
-------------------------------------------
Option #1. Website Tonight Hosting
-------------------------------------------
This is a favorite option among newbies. Website Tonight was
definitely created with the beginner in mind. There is absolutely
NO programming involved and it's ideal for smaller sites (20 pages
or less) and sites that will have a lot of photos (picture
galleries).
All you do is select a pre-created design template (there's over
100 to choose from) and add your own text and pictures. You are
allowed to customize the colors of the templates if you wish or you
can leave them "as is".
Personal and family websites are ideal for the Website Tonight
packages. However, if you are planning on building a fancy site
with additional functionality (chat rooms, background music,
databases, shopping, games, videos etc.) then this is not the best
option.
If you want a more advanced site and add interactivity then read
more about the other 2 options below.
Website Tonight is best for simple sites that contain mostly text
and pictures. It's really good for personal homepages, vacation
and hobby sites, etc.
If you choose WST, you'll select either a 1, 5, 10 or 20 page site.
The entire web page creation process is browser based and you'll
simply select a layout/design, add your text, and publish your site
to the Internet in a few easy steps.
This is truly a point and click building method. If you can use a
browser and a mouse, you'll have no problems with Website Tonight.
Most people that choose this option want a quick and simple
solution to building their site.
There is no software or additional tools needed to use Website
Tonight. It's completely web browser based.
To view a quick slide show/tour of WST, visit the link below.

Keep in mind that the above link is just a few screenshots of the
program. It is not an actual demo. It's just to give you an idea
of how Website Tonight works.

-------------------------------------------
Option #2. Turbo Charged Hosting
-------------------------------------------
This is for larger websites with more bells and whistles.
If you want chat rooms, music, message boards, games, online
ordering, etc. then you need a host like this since they provide
the platforms that support these kinds of add-ons.
######### IMPORTANT NOTE!! #########
A lot of subscribers to this newsletter want to create interactive
sites that include gaming, chat rooms, shopping, message forums,
communities, etc.
Keep in mind that even though a host like this provides the
platforms for these functions, you are responsible for setting up
the scripts on your site yourself.
There are no web hosts that I know of that actually build these
interactive features for you.
When you see websites that have these kinds of features, more than
likely they've hired programmers to create custom scripts for them
or they've installed them own their own. A web host does not build
these features for you. They only host them.
I just want to clear that up because I think a lot of people
believe these features just automatically come setup with a web
host. It's not really that simple because interactive features
require additional programming.
You can either hire someone to program these features for you, or
you can visit programming sites (java, javascript, etc.) that will
allow you to use and/or puchase their scripts. You'll find that a
lot of scripts are free.
So once you have a web host, you'd then go search various sites for
the kind of interactive script that you want to use (games, chat
rooms etc) and install them on your domain.
Also, keep in mind that the web host you choose will be able to
instruct you further on how to proceed with whatever you want to
create. Some may even provide the scripts for you.
I had a host a while back that had a Member's Area and it gave you
access to a bunch of different scripts (polls, message boards, chat
rooms, etc.) and they showed you how to install them on your site.
This is something you would ask about before you sign up. Simply
tell the prospective web host what you'd like to do with your site
and find out what kind of support is available for it.
I don't want to discourage you from creating a site with
interactivity because it can be VERY successful and fun. I just
want you to understand what is involved upfront.
############################################
Okay, back to details on the Turbo Charged option...
There are no web page building tools or templates that come with
this hosting plan, but if you have software like Microsoft
FrontPage then you can use this to create and publish your pages
directly to the Internet.
A Little Note About Microsoft FrontPage...
I'd like to say something about FrontPage before I continue. For
those of you who are unfamiliar with it, it's a software program
with a very similar interface to Microsoft Word that allows you to
save your web pages directly to the internet via the software.
It's nice because you create your pages much like you'd create a
Word document. The toolbars and shortcuts are very similar to
Word's and while you design your pages, the HTML coding is
automatically being written for you in the background.
To change font colors, you'd simply use the Format menu. There are
shortcut buttons for Bold and Underline just like there are in Word.
It's a good way to learn HTML if you wish because as you create
your site it writes the code in the background. So you can take a
peek to see how something was coded.
Or if you have no desire to learn HTML, you can continue creating
your pages in the WYSIWYG (what-you-see-is-what-you-get) editor
mode and use the menus and shortcuts. It will function just like
you're using Microsoft Word.
For years FrontPage has received a lot of heat from critics because
of its earlier versions.
I'll admit that the 1998 version was a bit annoying because it
automatically edited your code without permission and had some
other quirks. But that was back when many people were still using
professionals to build their sites and the demand for at-home web
publishing software was low.
Microsoft has come a long way. The 2000 version was a huge
improvement and 2003 has improved even more. In fact, I used the
2000 version to create and publish www.2createawebsite.com and I
still use it today.
My favorite feature is the shared border tool. This comes in handy
if you have a fairly large site because you can update your
navigation on every page by editing one file.
For example, let's say you have a 100+ page site like me. Instead
of opening every single page to make a change to the left
navigation, I only have to edit the shared file and it will update
the navigation on every single page of my site.
That's one of my many favorite features in the software.
I highly recommend Microsoft FrontPage. Even if you have some HTML
knowledge I think you'd be surprised at all it can do.
The Turbo Charged hosting plan supports Microsoft FrontPage so that
means if you own the software, you can open up your entire website
directly from FrontPage and save all your work right to the web.
If you're interested in purchasing it, Amazon has the best prices.
Don't ever go to a software store and purchase it at the retail
price.
Simply go to Amazon.com by clicking the link below and read about
FrontPage. Once you're there, you'll also see a link to where you
can purchase it "Used or New" from other Amazon affiliates and save
even more money.

Okay, back to hosting...
With the Turbo Charged plan, you will receive anywhere between 25
and 4,000 megabytes of space to create your site. This means you
can build as many pages as you wish as long as you stay within the
allotments of the plan you choose.
Just to give you an idea, 25 megabytes is about enough room to
create between 600 and 800 (text only) web pages. Graphics and
videos take up a little more space so if you plan on using a lot of
large images then of course that number will need to be adjusted.
Twenty-five megabytes is usually more than enough for many, but if
you discover you need more, you'll have the option of moving up to
a larger plan. The transition is very hassle-free.
So don't worry if you're not exactly sure how much space you'll
need. Start off small and then move to the next level if you need
to.
As I mentioned before you can add music to your site with this
option. I know from reading the surveys that a lot of you want to
add tunes to your site.
All you do is find the music file you want to use, save it to your
site and then paste some HTML code into your pages to make the
music play. The hosting support team will be glad to assist you on
this step when you're ready. It's pretty easy!
Prices start at $3.95 per month for the Turbo Charged hosting plans.

-------------------------------------------
Option #3. Powweb Web Hosting
-------------------------------------------
I used this company to host a site I once owned and I was so
impressed by how much they offer for such a low price that I like
to recommend them to my readers.
Powweb is a privately owned, debt free company backed by tons of
positive comments from happy customers. Their feedback is their
claim to fame as they proudly display over 100 testimonials from
their satisfied customers along with a link to the sites they've
created.
Powweb gives you a very generous 2,000 megabytes of space, a web
page builder and free design templates for only $7 per month. The
average web host offers between 25 and 100 megabytes of space so as
you can see 2,000 megabytes is quite generous for a web hosting
plan.
This is also a good option to use if you are going to have a lot of
media on your site. Videos take up space and bandwidth. Powweb
provides the support for these kinds of add-ons better than many
hosts out there.
You will also be able to use Microsoft FrontPage to create and
manage your site just like the Turbo Charged plan above.
For info on Microsoft FrontPage see...
http://clicks.aweber.com/z/ct/?dQG4LdpjdjFx_OWn5DwPnQ
In addition, Powweb provides the functionality so you can create
message boards, add background music, chat rooms, games, and all
the other interactive features by installing scripts if you wish.
Another great feature is their built-in shopping carts. If you are
going to take orders from your website the carts are already
pre-built for you.
Normally you would have to find or purchase a shopping cart script,
code it, install it, etc., but Powweb conveniently has these ready
for your use.
In my opinion, if you plan on selling goods from your website, this
is the best option to choose.
--------------------------------------
Powweb's Easy Website Builder
--------------------------------------
Powweb also offers a point and click website builder. All you do
is select a pre-designed template and add your text. Building your
site is a snap and you can choose from over 400 templates.
There's even an image editor that you can use to resize, crop,
rotate and edit any pictures you may have. You can test out the
site wizard by going here:
http://clicks.aweber.com/z/ct/?gZO9amwmAfCHgvteLGXX4A
I use Powweb to host another site that I have and I just tested it
out myself. I was surprised at how easy it was to use. This is
perfect for beginners.

For questions email support@powweb.com or call them toll free at
1-877-476-9932.
----------------------------------------------------------
Now, once you've selected the best host for your website, go to
their respective sites and sign up.
If you haven't registered your domain name yet, then proceed to
http://clicks.aweber.com/z/ct/?QeppJYiWHQQNMCX8Y2_4zg to do that first.
When you get to the section on the order form about hosting select
the appropriate host that you've chosen above.
NOTE: If you've selected Powweb, you'll have to go to their site
separately. So just select the hosting option that says "Using one
of my FREE options" when you register your domain.
This basically says that you are registering your domain at 2
Create a Website, but you are hosting the site somewhere else.
You'll be parking your domain for free until you sign up with you
rhost.
Then once your domain has been registered you can go to
http://clicks.aweber.com/z/ct/?5iwqYfSrILW5ZsrEXjlw9Q to sign up with them.
All your website maintenance will be done there.
-------------------------------------------------------
That concludes our hosting section. Read this issue again and again
until you understand all that is involved. I want you to make the
right decision for hosting your site.
Also, if you're worried about investing in something you don't
want, then you can always cancel. There are no long term contracts
with web hosting.
Also, ask questions! If you're not sure which host you should
choose to support the kind of site you want to create then please
ask. Tell the support team about the kind of site you want to
create and they can suggest the best hosting option.
